Our History

Fort Langley Evangelical Free Church was born of a prayer concern in the hearts of dedicated Christians who wanted to share the life-giving message of Jesus Christ with the Fort Langley Community. The church began as a bible study/prayer meeting in the Norm & Juanita Handy residence in 1972. The first public Sunday Worship Service was January 14th, 1973 in the Fort Langley Community Hall. The church was first established under the name Faith Evangelical Free Church and the ministry has been "building faith" ever since.

The first pastor was Reverend Stanley Nelson who was installed on September 29th, 1973. When Pastor Stan retired the church called Pastor Bill Meir and during his tenure the church built their present facility. The official ground breaking took place in June of 1978 and the first service in the new building was September 2, 1979. All the finishings were completed and a Celebration of Dedication was held on March 2, 1980.

Fort Langley EFC has always developed a strong lay leadership that has kept ministry thriving. The church has also been blessed with long pastoral ministry in Pastor Jamey McDonald (1990-1998) and Pastor Ken Ratcliffe (1995-present.) For a number of years the church has prayed about increasing our building space for more effective ministry. In 2005 we launched a Building Expansion program under the vision statement of Serving Community – Building Faith.

Our church family has grown from less than 10 families into a healthy growing church of more than 400. We have also helped plant two churches over the last 10 years. Grace Community Church in Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge was a church plant in the late 1990s. Fort Langley sent their Senior Pastor at the time, Jamey McDonald to establish the work for 6 months before handing it over to Pastor Colin Peters who still serves that fellowship. Then in 2003 our church began a Korean church plant within our ministry. Today, with the continued leadership of Pastor Namgyu Lee, the Church of the Sent for Life Proclamation is a growing independent Free Church, meeting in Langley City since February 2008.

Through the years, God has blessed the faithful and serving hearts of our fellowship of believers and by His grace we will continue to serve our community and build faith in Jesus Christ.
